American Quarter Horses are smaller in size than many other horses, but they are distinctively sturdy and agile, and second to none in speed. They stand no more than 15 hands tall and feature very muscular hindquarters. That’s why they are mostly pictured from behind. These horses arrived in America in the 17th century with first English colonists. They carry the genes of Arab, Turk and Barb breeds, and also have the genes of some Irish and English breeds. They were used in quarter-mile racing competitions, a very popular entertainment in the Wild West.

Owners of purebred stallions and mares who want to produce foals have to make sure that their current species are really worth breeding. The main aim of every breeding should be improvement of the breed in general, so both the stallion and the mare should be at least above average in performance, progeny, pedigree and reproduction. It is important that the offspring does better than its predecessors; otherwise there is zero chance that this breed will have future. Breeding stock should undergo regular health examinations.
