Training should be started at an early age. Patience and restraint are crucial in the way of upbringing. Misbehavior should not be left without punishment. At the same time, the punishment should not be too tough, but it must be firm enough for the animal to take into consideration.

When training your horse, you should emphasize the animal's original qualities and physical characteristics. Quarter Horses are gentle and restrained by nature, and therefore they should be treated accordingly. They have inborn sprinting and racing aptitudes, and it is necessary to boost these aptitudes by everyday exercise. Nevertheless, do not expose your horse to overstrain.

Study the body movements of your horse. Start to battle bolting inclinations, if any occur, at an early age, because if you fail to eliminate this trait at this stage, it may become instilled and later you will not be able to handle the problem. It may even become dangerous to approach your horse if you cannot predict its behavior. American Quarter Horses are naturally timid, but like any horse, your early mistakes can result in you placed in a body cast with fractures.
