All purebred American Quarter Horses need registered at the American Quarter Horse Association. This is done in order to trace the quality of the breed and sift out faulty species. Only those animals can take part in breeding programs that fully live up to the AQHA breed standard.

White markings are indicators of the purity of the breed. They are present on the face and under hock joints. A white spot any place else indicates that this is not a purebred animal. Therefore, breeding programs exclude them.
American Quarter Horses - Stallions - Health issues
Adult Quarter horses, if cared for properly, are generally resistant to illnesses. The young require constant supervision, examination and inoculation. Although some people think that there is no effective vaccine against horse flu, one should not discount it because it substantially reduces the risk of developing the infection.
There are some genetically inherited diseases, such as Hyperkalemia. This is a disease characterized by periodic paralytic attacks, which occur due to the mutation of the sodium potassium channel in the horse's muscle cells. Such spasmodic attacks may result in collapse and traumas, and in hard cases may lead to early death.
Another serious health problem is equine sarcoid, a tumor, which develops on the head, legs and belly. This tumor can be a lifelong problem for a horse. Surgical operation can remove them, but it recurs frequently. Also treatment with Introtumoral chemotherapy, a radio- and laser therapy is used. Fortunately, it does not metastasize, and Quarter Horses usually stay alive for a long time.
