This breed began in the 17th century as a cross between imported English Thoroughbreds and the best native equines developed by Native American peoples from Spanish mounts. So, this breed combines the blood of Iberian, Arabian and Barb stock and is perfectly adapted for harsh conditions. The ancestors of modern purebreds were small, hardy, and quick. They were used for work during the week and for racing on the weekends. The breed gained population as flat racing on short distances became popular among the early settlers. The breed was even named after the distance at which it excelled.

These animals require qualified maintenance and veterinary supervision, because they may suffer from various infectious and genetic diseases. If there is a genetic disorder, this species should not be admitted to any breeding project whatsoever. They need to be trained and cared for properly. Any bolting inclination must be nipped in the bud as soon as it is spotted, because if you miss it, you will never be able to correct it.
